Zambia VAT Calculator: How ZRA VAT Is Added and Removed
Last updated: August 2026·Reviewed by Wanjiru Kamau, Tax Analyst in Nairobi·Source

Zambia's standard VAT rate is 16%, administered by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) under the Value Added Tax Act.
How it's calculated
| Task | Formula |
|---|---|
| Add VAT to a net price | Net price × 1.16 |
| Find VAT portion of a net price | Net price × 0.16 |
| Remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price | Inclusive price ÷ 1.16 |
| Find VAT portion of an inclusive price | Inclusive price − (Inclusive price ÷ 1.16) |
Worked example
A supplier sells goods for ZMW 10,000 net (VAT-exclusive).
- VAT to add: ZMW 10,000 × 16% = ZMW 1,600
- Total invoice: ZMW 11,600
If a customer instead pays ZMW 11,600 inclusive of VAT:
- Net amount: ZMW 11,600 ÷ 1.16 = ZMW 10,000
- VAT portion: ZMW 11,600 − ZMW 10,000 = ZMW 1,600
Things to know
- Businesses must register for VAT once annual taxable turnover exceeds ZMW 800,000; registration below that threshold is voluntary.
- Zambia mixes zero-rated supplies (mainly exports) with exempt supplies (including some basic foodstuffs and financial services) — zero-rated sellers can reclaim input VAT, exempt sellers generally cannot.
- VAT returns are filed monthly via ZRA's TaxOnline platform. The standard rate has held at 16% since 2013, down from an earlier 17.5%.
